Sonnenborgh is historically an important site:

  • It was built in 1552 on the orders of Emperor Charles V to defend the city of Utrecht against a new weapon: the movable cannon.
  • The first Hortus Botanicus of Utrecht University was established here in 1639.
  • In 1854, scientist Christoforus Buys Ballot founded an astronomical and meteorological institute (KNMI) at Sonnenborgh.

    Het Terreplein is de indrukwekkende binnenplaats van het 16e-eeuwse bastion, overdekt met een glazen dak. De ruimte biedt plaats aan 80 tot 100 personen. Koffie, thee, lunch en/of een afsluitende borrel kunnen verzorgd worden in de zaal. Het Terreplein is voorzien van een groot LCD-scherm voor presentaties, een geluidsinstallatie, een handmicrofoon op statief en wifi.

    De collegezaal uit 1909 heeft een klassieke collegezaal-opstelling en biedt plaats aan 35 personen. De gasten nemen plaats op de authentieke houten collegebanken, waar menig wetenschapper (waaronder volgens de overlevering Einstein) zijn eerste ideeën voor baanbrekend onderzoek opdeed. Aanwezig zijn een schoolbord, beamer, projectiescherm en wifi.
